WIW: Culottes

Good Morning Ladies:)

"Culottes" is such a funny word and I am never sure how to spell it! You may have seen this before as I am sure I posted a very similar outfit probably about this time last year:). The culottes are not getting a lot of wear but I do love them and I think my two new felt toppers are going to work well with them, so they may start getting out a bit more:)

Work outfit today... Black culottes, navy satin blouse and grey, black and white moto style jacket with wedge heel suede boots.

I note the culottes are a slightly firmer fit this year....hmmm.

What do you think? Are culottes one of those items that transcend what's in fashion? Are they still a fringe item?

Thanks for looking.
xxxDeborah

That moto on you is utter PERFECTION Deb! So incredibly gorgeous. And I adore the pairing of dark blue and navy.

I think culottes are difficult to pull off but you have done it brilliantly with this outfit. Absolutely love it!

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Thanks Shannon. I think culottes can go one of two ways, they can look modern and edgy or they can look simply frumpy... Im going for the former lol.
This moto is now about 4 years old and I don't see it leaving my closet anytime soon, it's great when I still want my dark tones but with a touch of 'light'.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

That's exactly right about the culottes. For me at my height and size, they are fully ensconced in the frumpy category. But on elegant you and in this combination, they are edgy and classy.

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

You are too kind Shannon. You know we are the same height and Im guessing not disimilar in size:) I did just catch my profile in a window while out getting coffee and the front view on this outfit is definitely the most flattering. I think their next outing willl involve a longer topper, and definitely one that covers my rather ample rear lol:)

I think this is a really elegant look, and is the perfect ensemble for culottes. I like all the rich textures.

Funny about the word "culottes": when I was a kid, for years I thought it was "gulocks" because that was how my mom, with her combination of weird accent/slur and whatever misinterpretation of the pronunciation she had, said it. I always thought it was the funniest word...

    LOVE!

    KILLER

    forgot the helmet :(

Deborah, you look totally fabulous in this. I LOVE that blouse, the color is gorgeous.
My idea of culottes has always been above the knee, though the last I wore them was in elementary school :)

  • replied 10 years ago

Love these! I have always wanted to try a pair. I love how they look with tall boots.

  • always trying replied 10 years ago

Those certainly don't look like what I am associating the word "culottes " with.  My mom used to wear something she called culottes but they looked like a divided skirt-much fuller looking than yours.  I always hated hers and never owned such a thing.  Yours are very nice looking!!

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

Are you joking? You must be joking. These are fabulous on you!!!

Plus, I absolutely completely adore you in this navy blouse. The jacket is fantastic, too, of course, and a lovely complement, but do you know, I almost prefer the blouse only version? Partly because the combo of the navy and black is so rich and flattering to you, and partly I guess because of my minimalist gene.

It is quite funny. To look at my house you would never guess I have a minimalist bone in my body. House dates from 1860s and has small rooms, lots of detailing, stuffed with books, antique furniture.

Sometimes I wish I could come live at your place instead.

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Suz you are funny! I like it without the jacket too but it's freezing here today. You are welcome to come and stay anytime. My general minimalism tends to flow through all areas of my life. If I walked away from my desk to make coffee and you passed my office, you wouldn't be sure if I was in at work or not lol. One time, a newly made friend visited us and asked if we were still in the process of setting up our house i.e. had we just moved in lol... it was the empy white walls... he didn't understand why with so much wall space and high ceilings we didn't have paintings etc everywhere :)

  • NancyT replied 10 years ago

Very elegant Deborah, I love it with and without the jacket.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

I love them! I have been very interested in culottes lately and this confirms why. You look great! I love the touch with the orange (?) belt/belt buckle too.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

That is going to be my next house.

In all honesty, the decor of this house was largely influenced by the house itself. It simply seemed to demand what we have done with it. We already had a fair bit of antique furniture (Canadiana) but in our old house we had white walls and modern art and modern upholstered pieces so the balance worked out. Here we still have the modern art but because of the scale everything feels different. Both Mr. Suz and I would like to open things up but it will have to wait until we move the next time.

I hear you on the weather. Warmth with beauty is a good compromise!!

  • lyn* replied 10 years ago

This is definitely the modern and edgy way to wear culottes :)

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Good point Suz. Our home totally lends it self to modern minimalism. My furniture is a little eclectic but it still reads as modern. To fill our home with antiques would just be 'wrong' somehow. So is a move on the horizon? From what I have seen in your WIW pics, your home has warmth and reminds me of what I consider to be a very english style (not the cottagy thing, but more the elegant, classic look).

I love culottes! In fact, I just bought a pattern to make myself a pair this summer if I ever get around to it.

The navy blouse with black culottes is a fantastic combination. Add the moto jacket, and it's simply divine!

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

Love this outfit Deborah, the jacket is fab & I think I may have that blouse :) Culottes sounds better than  knee-breeches which is what they were originally called in English :)

  • amiable replied 10 years ago

I have a very similar pair of culottes (same proportions, but mine are a mid-gray with very very narrow pin stripes).  They mystify me.  No matter what I try, they just don't seem to work.  BUT, I've never tried them as a winter item - I always thought shorts+skirt.. It must be summer. But it's a heavy fabrication, and I think I might set them in the fall/winter box and see what I think when it's cooler - they might be perfect over tights.

You look completely wonderful and sophisticated, as always.

I have a mind to make a summer silk version of your felt toppers.  And it occurred to me that the finish on the arm-holes could also be done with fray-check if it was a natural fiber that wouldn't seal by burning.

  • Eliza replied 10 years ago

Amazing!!! Love how you elevate culottes to an art form.

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Caro, the blouse is from Target :)

  • carolbee replied 10 years ago

I must admit that I am not a fan of culottes, but you rock them. This outfit is a typical Deborah fab look.

  • Debra replied 10 years ago

Gorgeous outfit, very stylish and edgy.
Love it, I'm looking for culottes to add to my wardrobe now :)

  • Debora replied 10 years ago

Deborah, you are rocking those culottes! You bring such sophistication to every outfit you wear. LOVE!

  • Inge replied 10 years ago

I'm a big fan of culottes, and this is a brilliant outfit, Deborah! Love them with the tall boots, very sophisticated. And I adore the tonal effect you have going on, and how you then add a touch of silver with the necklace, and some crisp white with your watch and accents in the jacket. Beautiful!

  • Susie replied 10 years ago

If you had asked me if I like culottes- before looking at your photos- my answer would have been a definite no. But you rock them!! They look great here. I especially like how you paired them with boots. I picture culottes being a summer weight fabric, and fuller, more like a skirt. These remind me of "gauchos" from the 70's I think.

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

Not everyone could wear those culottes, but you look like a high fashion model. Just perfect!

  • Aida replied 10 years ago

I love culottes and I love these outfits! Especially smitten with #2 *swoon*

(Where oh where are my cream winter culottes *sniffle*)

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

    Aida needs to see this!

  • catgirl replied 10 years ago

Oops, just saw that she did.  :)

  • rachylou replied 10 years ago

Culottes rock! Wherever did you get them? I've been keeping half-an-eye out for some.

  • Lyn D. replied 10 years ago

A late addition Deborah, but had to share that the 'Style Mag' in the newspaper today is talking about culottes being back 'On-Trend' .
So you are leading the way here with your 2013 versions!

  • annagybe replied 10 years ago

Well Acne is doing them much bigger and wider for Fall 2013

I love the toppers. I have a poison eye for "culottes" but you make them work.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 10 years ago

Transcendent for sure! The outfit is just awesome on you, one of my favorites! Which is really a tough thing to say, because I love your style and it's hard to choose favorites. I don't know how you do it with the culottes, but they are super stylish and looking very current, and I don't know if they are even a fringe trend, technically, right now.

eta: oops, I was so excited, I commented without reading through all the other comments. I guess they are indeed in style!
