WIW : Heatwave Style?

Well it's debatable just how stylish this is, if it all lol.

Today it's 39 degrees and Master 10 and I are planing to stay home most of the day but we do have to go out a little later, so today's outfit is comfort based:)

I love shorts on others but don't love these denim shorts but I do find them useful for hot days at home, so until I can purchase my dream shorts, (black, drapey, asymmetric hemline) these are it.

The top is new and I just love the drape and detail. It is light and easy to wear.

And while I am not wearing my booties in the house, this is my intended footwear for later in the day when we go out.

I feel this is a bit of a mish mash and looks as tho I can't decide if Im a country girl or a city girl lol.

Thanks for looking and your thoughts always appreciated. Still getting used to the new hair. Love it in the mirror but still getting used to seeing it in photos:)

xxx Deborah

    WHOA.

I can only dream of looking this stylish in a heat wave.

Debs, I don't know if I am crazy or what, but to me, this is a K to power of K look right here. I love it on you!! The juxtaposition of textures, the drape of the top, those beyond cool bootie/ sandals....um....this is what I would love to look like in summer.

Can you share where you got the booties and top?

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Suz, thank you!  You are too lovely and sure know how to make a fellow YLFer feel good:)  I am trying not to think too much about outfit compositiion at the moment and just go with my instincts more.

The booties are from Rubi Shoes.  They are a cheap chain store catering for teens and tweens.  But they often do edgy stuff and copy overseas designs so i always keep an eye out.  The booties were about $40 but i got them on sale a bit cheaper:)  Good way to try out something without a huge investment.

The top is from Katies another chain store that caters for wide age range with a clientele from 20 year olds to 50 plus.  Nice quality and not cheap but affordable.  I have been very surprised recently at some of the design details of some of their newer pieces.

I'm attaching photos of two other tops I have bought their recently for your info.

Just popped back to say Suz that as much as I love drape, I really like drape with structure and I think these tops will all work in cooler weather with the structured jackets.

Great combination, Deborah! To look so good in shorts........
ETA still loving the new hair!

    Great summer look.

  • Suz replied 10 years ago

It seems like some of the Australian chains do a more modern look (or avant-garde, according to our former way of using the term). It's super difficult to find these looks at a reasonable price point in Canada. I really love these tops, especially today's and the white one. They're a perfect summer look. It is what I would like, although sadly, I don't think I can wear the draping -- however, a top similar to the one you have today might be do-able.

    Thank you for the leads!

I'd try etsy for harem shorts. A lot of the vendors ship all over the world.
    For example

    Killer

I love this look on you, Debs. Please send over the heat wave.

  • Lyn D. replied 10 years ago

    Hi Deborah!
I shamelessly copied your title because it is sooo hot again!
Without reading yours first I guessed you might be wearing a similar top to mine today- and you are :)
Mine is David Lawrence- I am finding that the only way I can curb my buying ATM is to try to only buy natural fabrics. They cost more but I am really aiming to keep my clothing numbers as they are so I actually wear everything.
So I am deleting the Katies emails- I know I will be sorely tempted by some of their affordable pieces if I don't.

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Angie, if I could I would most certainly send the heat over to you. I am wilting. Just finished a Nerf War with Master 10 and I need a nana nap. The heat is excruciating.

  • Jaime replied 10 years ago

I absolutely love your hot weather style Deborah and am taking mental notes for my long summer. I would wear this outfit in a heartbeat (maybe with lower heels). I love that a local brand is making these great tops, even if it means I can't order one as I would otherwise be tempted!

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Thanks Shevia. Always happy to buy and post for anyone wanting something from over here :)

  • Transcona Shannon replied 10 years ago

Absolutely gorgeous Deborah. Very cool for the heat.

Land sakes woman! I go A.W.O.L. for a few weeks, come back, and you have a whole new 'do! It looks absolutely fabulous and I can't peel my eyes from you. *fanning* WOW. I love your new top and your edgy summer style, too!

  • Greyscale replied 10 years ago

I love that top. Your outfits are definitely inspiring me to think more about my warm weather clothes. I just bought an asymmetric tee from Oak today, similar to some Complex Geometries styles, and thought of you.

I think you're totally right, Suz - I've noticed that the Australian YLFers often have really fashion-forward pieces from less expensive stores. I'm envious. Those styles just wouldn't sell well over here.

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

    You are all so kind:)

Lyn I don't read the Katies emails but we do have a store close to my office!  I tend to scan their website every now and again but this top was an accident.  I was in Melbourne last week so Master 10 could see one of is best mates and had a couple of free hours at Southland:)

Claire I wondered where you were.  I was only thinking about you last night.  I made the assumption that you balance your time between YLF and other commitments better than I lol x

  • Deborah replied 10 years ago

Greyscale why wouldn't they sell well were you are?  Forgive me but I can't recall if you are in the US or for some reason I South Africa is  in my head??

  • carter replied 10 years ago

Heat wave dressing is hard, especially since I hit 48 or so a couple years ago. You look great. I love to see women dressed appropriately in shorts. I have several pair of walking shorts that i wear on vacation, but I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and make myself wear them around town this year if it's as hot as last year. Thanks for the inspiration!

  • Sarah A replied 10 years ago

Love this Deborah! (and also wishing we had a Katies here in the US!, those are fantastic tops so modern and really bring the wow factor :) to hot weather dressing )

  • Joy replied 10 years ago

Wow, Lady, you look HOT, in the best way. All those Katie's are sensational pieces on you.

  • carolbee replied 10 years ago

Wow, love that top. Not sure how you manage to wear the booties in that heat, my feet would melt.

For some reason I never look in my local Katies, although I did buy a dress from them when in Brissie last year. I'm tempted to look now, but since I said about a month ago that I do not need anymore summer tops and have bought four more already ..... (but they were bought with my travel capsule for Europe in June in mind, so do they count? -lol).

  • Ginkgo replied 10 years ago

    Wow again, you look fabulous!

  • Lantana replied 10 years ago

Yep, I think you look great too. In fact I think you could easily pull off more distressing in the denim.

  • kkards replied 10 years ago

wow, you look great. love the drapey top and the longer shorts.

  • gryffin replied 10 years ago

Deborah - still howing over your nerf gun picture!! You are the chicest nerf victim ever!! My son has the same guns but I run for cover when he's on a "mission!!" Love your outfits and the drapey tops. I second Suz, I am so crushing on your peeptoe sandal/booties!! I love that look and I've never been able to find a pair IRL that I like that fits. So I am really enjoying seeing yours!! Wishing you cool breezes and we'd be really happy to take some of that heat off your hands!!

  • Windchime replied 10 years ago

LOL, Deborah--I'm forever finding those exact peach colored Nerf gun pieces in surprise places around my house. You are a fun Mom! I love this shirt and booties with your shorts and am taking notes for when it finally warms up here.

  • Gracie replied 10 years ago

What a cool, inspiring mix. I wish we had a store like Katie's around here, I love the drapey pieces you got from them. I agree with Lantana that you could pull off more distressing in the shorts easily. Your sunnies and haircut are both fab too!

  • Lisa replied 10 years ago

A great drapey top, you have a nice drapey top collection.  All my tops are form fitting for the heat, I need to keep drape in mind next time I shop for warm weather wear.  You look very cool in this. And the shorts are the perfect length for you too.  Nice look here!

  • shemarie replied 10 years ago

So gorgeous! I really look forward to your WIWs as you do "heat" style so fabulously and I'm furiously taking notes! My summer/warm season lasts about 8 or 9 months, so instead of buying more sweaters, jeans, and boots which I just can't rationalize, I'm saving for my predominant climate, which I still really struggle with.  I have such a hard time being stylish or edgy with so few pieces, but you do it so well.  I'm learning it's all in the details, the fit, the drape, the hair, etc.  You look fabulous! Thanks for your wonderful inspiration!

  • Greyscale replied 10 years ago

I'm in the US, San Francisco. Mainstream stores here stick to very basic silhouettes. And the fast fashion stores are more focused on teenybopper looks than avant garde. Luckily there's a good Zara near me at least!

I guess it's not so bad, and some of these looks do get to us eventually, but for instance I remember harem jeans were such a huge thing in Australia when I visited in 2010 and are only now maaaaybe reaching the mainstream in the US. They're not my favorite look, but it's indicative of some general trend I think.

  • Beth Ann replied 10 years ago

This looks very urban to me, Deborah, with bits of feminine in the drape of the top.  Looks more NYC than Walmart in central Arkansas, although I do have a wears-like-iron drapey black top from Walmart!

I've been off teaching this week, 2 days in a row, because the Univ. cancelled classes due to a -35F windchill.  Shorts look dreamy to me at the moment, but I remember the trouble of dressing for heat, and I'll be just like you in........6 months (sob).

  • Caro in Oz replied 10 years ago

Nice & edgy Deborah doesn't look confused at all :) It's too hot here for my shorts & shooties I'm living in my linen dresses :)

  • Hil replied 10 years ago

Hi Deb! I just love this... The juxtaposition of edge and distressed and drape with the classic combo of denim and black.

It's been really hot here too (not Ozzie hot, but almost!) and I can tell you I know how you feel!!!

  • Neel replied 10 years ago

Just stunning! Taking notes for my denim skirt ... And those shoes are beyond cool!! And I love your hairstyle. Very chic and stylish.

Hello there, I've been holidaying in Bali and have had limited time on the Internet so am catching up......you look fabulous :) love this outfit. I always have a peek in Katies, they have had some lovely clothes in stock lately.
As for Nerf wars......how much fun are they, I have twin 9 year old grandchildren and have bought my own guns now so I have a chance when I'm ambushed :)
