Vegan Leather Pants???

Hi Fabbers,

Apologies, slow day at the office and I will try not to bombard you with too many posts today:)

Can someone tell me the difference between vegan leather and pleather?  Doing a little research online suggests that Vegan Leather is simply a 'cooler' moniker for faux or fake leather??

I get that technically it is supposed to be made from non animal products and Vegan leather is supposed to be eco friendly (the PVC versions are not).

I have noticed on many blogs, bloggers referencing their vegan leather items in a manner that suggests they are really cool :)

Educate me.. please?

Of course, I do have a deeper reason for asking... I just bought a pair of vegan leather pants!!  So much for not buying anything else this month ha ha.  Will be posting K/R as they were a whim and I am not sure:)

xxx Deborah

Interesting question. I had just assumed that vegan leather was just the fancy marketing name for faux leather, the "vegan" meaning that no animals were killed.

I didn't know that some kinds of pleather were not eco-friendly.

Can't wait to see what others say! :)

    Yes.

I got these coated ponte pants - they look similar to vegan leather or real leather, but are thick, stretchy and cheaper.

Love the look. I wonder if fake leather pants will be, how to put this delicately, a little sweatier and a little smellier? I imagine either leather or cotton would breathe in a way fake leather might not.

Lucy that is a very good point;). Checked the washing instructions and they can be machine washed in cold water!!

It's true vegan leather is just another term for artificial leather.

It does seem to be a marketing ploy but if you love the pants and they are washable, it sounds like they are a good find.  I am looking forward to seeing how you style them.  Perhaps with the metallicus (sp) jacket.  :)

I always laugh when I hear "vegan" because I just assumed it meant pleather...another marketing term.

But i cannot wait to see yours!

I'm with Dianthus - if they work then why not?

I laugh a little bit when I see all the faux leather things being marketed as "vegan" leather now -- it's smart marketing. It sounds so much nicer, doesn't it?

That said, some faux/vegan leathers are nicer than others. And I'm sure some are more eco-friendly in others, if kindness to the planet is a concern. I agree that quality can be all over the map. Some of its truly nice, and some of it has a weird plasticky feel that I can't stand.

Yes, I also think "vegan" leather just means faux leather--sometimes pvc trousers are included in this description, and that is of course a PLASTIC product. Not to be confused with eco-friendly leather, which shouldn't use plastic, or heavy dyes, or animals. Pretty confusing.

I am looking for a pair of faux leather, eco-friendly, breathable leggings that won't cost me an arm and a leg. Any winners that you have found out there?

Deborah - have you worn them around the house?  I bought faux leather leggings from the gap and I am not a sweaty person but I lasted exactly 25 minutes.  Very unpleasant.  Donated.  Bought real leather leggings and adore them, very comfy and not hot at all.  If they feel good and look good that's all that counts.  Good luck, adore this look!!
