Zara Long Jacket??

Hi Ladies,

Need you eagle eyes!  But first please excuse my tired, no makeup look :)  Really only Master 12 and DH see me like this lol.  You guys are like family;)

I have had this Zara jacket for a while.  It is 90% wool and 10% nylon and kind of feels like linen. I have always loved this style of long jacket but for quite some time my hips tend to be too wide for this cut.  Since January I have lost 7kg (and almost 2 inches of my hips) so tonight I thought I would roughly style the jacket and see if it might work.

This is very roughly styled.  Excuse the scunched (ok shoved up sleeves in #3)  I am petite so my concerns are is it too long? and do I look too "hip-y" in it? Of course if you could check the shoulder fit too that would be great.   I am not so bothered if the jacket is 'on trend' or not:)

So what do you think.  Could it work?

Thanks for taking a look:)
xxx Deborah

Oh, from your description I wasn't sure what to expect shapewise. You had me worried..but I needn't have been :) I do like the length a lot and it looks fine around the hips. It looks very promising. As for the shoulders, well, maybe a back view would have been good too. They may only be a teensy smidge wide, but they look comfortable. They give you a strong line and balance you so you may be better leaving well alone. I really like how you styled this outfit too. The length gives a bit of a vibe of a frock coat. Lovely!

I hesitated a little about the length, because I also struggle with a longer jacket; but I think it works as you've styled it here as a column of colour, and with the scrunched sleeves.  It's very flattering over your hips, so no problem there at all.  I think it could work very well for you.

I really like this. Agree with Diane that it calls a frock coat to mind, although my first thought was zoot suit ;) I like the loose fit, but if you wanted to take this style further you could definitely afford to size down for a sleeker look.

Sorry you've been so stressed out lately. Hope you're enjoying the break!

You look great! I like it with the scrunched sleeves and black pants. I wonder if the shoulders are a little big but not a deal breaker.

I like it! I wish I had something like it in my closet. I don't think it makes you look hip-y at all.

  • AM replied 9 years ago

You look beautiful with and without make-up! Your face has such an innocence to it without make-up, simply beautiful.

And I also didn't know what to expect from your post and the use of "hip-y" -- and this is definitely one of these cases that you might not being seeing yourself correctly. I think the jacket is fabulous.

And lastly, congratulations on your weight loss! Well done. So inspiring.

You look very narrow in this Deborah!  Congratulations on the weight loss!  I too am trying to lose weight (and lost about what you have so far - but I think I'm taller and my progress shows less).  I have about 5kg to go to reach my goal weight, and progress is tough and slow right now.

About the jacket - it's simply gorgeous and fits you well.  I'm glad you hung on to it!

I'm a spanner and need more convincing, Debs. Sorry to be a wet blanket.

I don't think you look wide at all - PLENTY svelte and gorgeous. It's the length that I find too long for your petite height. (You know Iengths are my thing). And you've already styled it with a column of colour, which is what I would have suggested to visually shorten the length.

ETA: It's the blazer style in the length that I find too long here - not the actual length of the jacket in general  (especially when worn over a dress). If the style were different, the length would probably work just fine.

I like the long jacket for your style.  I don't think it makes you look hip-y at all.  I don't think it makes you look short either.  I actually have no idea how tall you are, but for some reason I never think of you as shorter than me (I'm 5'6").

  • replied 9 years ago

Sorry, but I think it is too big in the shoulders and too long for you. Congrats on the weight loss and you look pretty without makeup!

  • catgirl replied 9 years ago

I love this jacket on you. As you know, I tried the long jacket look here - similar proportions - and got a pretty lukewarm response. I think this is one of those looks that just FEELS good to some of us. Being short is a really annoying buzz-kill and honestly if I found the right jacket I'd probably just wear it anyway and never show you all. :)

Deborah - well you knew that I was going to love this!  That being said I personally find this length the most difficult to style.  I have a very similiar jacket so I can only tell you what works for me.  First I love it on you.  But I find this style really is a riff on the western frock coat.  I personally think it looks best with a black cigarette pant, leggings, leather leggings, or a dress of almost equal length with black tights.  For me it works best with a chunky bootie with a bit of heel to balance the length.  I don't think it makes you look hippy at all but I think this is a very tailored, slim, elongated style.  I had to laugh because you know in your heart this is a "griffin" jacket.  Just like when I buy a long kimono type jacket I know I am wearing a "Deborah" coat!!  I wear my long VC jacket with a tux like tank, embellished belt, black cigarette pants and booties.  If you go monochromatic or select a top with less drape you will bring out the sleekness and character of the jacket and create a longer slimmer line - goodbye hips!!  You can also wear a long tunic/dress with a low hip belt - best if it creates a v with a long pendant and again enhance the sleek line.  I think it's when you try to make the jacket work with your lovely draped pieces there is a slight disconnect because you are not letting the frock coat be what it whats to be.  I think if you streamline the bottom and play with tops you will find the Deborah in the jacket.  But I think with the right support pieces it is absolutely stunning and flattering on you!!

I don't love this on you Deborah for me it's to do with the fit rather than the style. Imo this style needs to be slimer fitting through the shoulder & sleeves like gryffin's #4.

  • Carole replied 9 years ago

Just wanted to say how fantastic you look, Deborah!

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

The jacket is beyond cool. But also strangely conservative. I think you could style it more daring.

  • Echo replied 9 years ago

I am absolutely NO help, because I am of two minds. My first thought is that it is GREAT, and such an unusual and fun style. My second is that it is just a bit overwhelming on you. About two and a half inches shorter (and if we're being picky, a BLACK lining that wouldn't show when your legs are apart enough to see the back side) and I think it would be perfect.

  • Jaime replied 9 years ago

My first reaction was it is too wide in the shoulders. Perhaps it is actually the length throwing me off? What do you think?

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

I love the idea of this for you. A long frock-type jacket. But I feel as if the fit or perhaps the cut of this one are not quite perfect. It might be the shoulders or sleeves (would like to see them more tailored) or it might be the length (just a touch too long?). I truly don't know. If you love it, I might keep and play with, while looking for an upgrade.

And congratulations on the weight loss. NO worries about "hippy". You look fab.

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

Thanks so much ladies.  I actually see the positives and the negatives which is why I wanted to know what you think:)  I may see how it works as 'outerwear', over a skinny column of black, heeled boots and chunky scarf, before I make a final decision. Othewise it's on Ebay :)  Thanks xxx

  • gryffin replied 9 years ago

Deborah - just one last thought that's been niggling at me.  The balance might be better if you wore a more cropped top.  I think it's that the lovely top you have on might just be too long to bring out the in this style.  I have to laugh I had a similiar thought last night that if you put this one as "outerwear" no one would say boo to the length.  But honestly, I think it's more style being strict and tailored may require more effort to play nicely with you more drapey pieces.  You know best what feels "you" and that's honestly all that matters!

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

Thanks Gryffin, we are clearly on a similar wave length :)  Now that you have suggested a more cropped top, I can see that creating much better proportions.  Thank you!  I will continue to play and see how I go.

  • Ariadne replied 9 years ago

The thing that bugs me is the straight hem--it it were curved, angled, or hi-lo I think I'd love it.

  • unfrumped replied 9 years ago

I also think it is too big, given the more crisp fabrication. If it were drapey, maybe. And the straight.curved edge hem. Maybe if pointy angles in front.
It's not unwearable, but I'm not sure it adds anything above your other outfits.

I know I have trouble letting go of items that are fairly well-made, tailored or structured and things like woven wool. And see Debbie's post on reincarnating items with new proportions. But I think you have other more fab things or will come across them.

  • Jeweled replied 9 years ago

You look cute - but the length and oversize fit feel like the jacket is wearing you.  The details (lapels, etc.) also feel too large for you.  I think a long jacket that's closer to your own scale would be much more flattering.  Also perhaps a jacket that looks less stiff or heavy would be more "you"?

  • Lyn D. replied 9 years ago

    Hi Deborah,
I see what everyone else is seeing, and usually find that if I am unsure about fit and proportions the piece probably is just going to be annoyingly not-quite-right when I wear it!
Also I know that you already have 1 or 2 other black jackets somewhere in your closet you could wear instead :) :)

  • lyn67 replied 9 years ago

I also knew it would be a griffin jacket, so befre selling it on ebay, I vote try what her majesty said:-).
ETA: Congrats on your weight loss!

  • replied 9 years ago

It's true, you do look slimmer! I think the jacket is too dominant, probably because of the combination of the low stance and the length.
You look very pretty though, I like your tired eyes look.

  • tulle replied 9 years ago

Well, the shoulders give me pause, but with enough swagger you can make it work, I think.  Like Gryffin, I vote for a top about 2 or 3" shorter.  Skinnier black pants would help, too.  And must agree with all those who say you're gorgeous without makeup!
