WIW : Shorts on Saturday!

Hi Ladies,

I own one pair of shorts and these are it:)  I thrifted a pair of wide leg cropped jeans with the specific intent of cutting them down into shorts.  And these are the end result.  They don't get worn often but every now and again they are just what I need in our heat.

It's Saturday and we had lots of running around to do today and ended up at the skating rink with Master 11.

Denim Shorts
 - DIY, thrifted
Top
- complexgeometries (why does Canada have the most awesome designers?)
Birk-a-likes
- Target

Thanks for looking:)  I really don't like myself in shorts but some days the weather wins over our (my) style sensibilities

xxx Deborah

Fabulous top! Love the shorts too. I bought  pair of the Target Birk-a-likes a couple of months ago and LOVED them. Unfortunately, mine wore out already (the sole completely wore through in no time. I do walk a lot, so hopefully yours will last longer. I ended up getting real Birkenstocks just this week, from the German website. They're great, and much less than the ones in store here ($70 v $120).

Dimity, thanks:)  I bought the black and the white from target and I can see they are not going to last long.  I wasn't sure if Birks were really me so I was reluctant to spend on the real deal.  As it turns out I really like them and I could see them becoming a staple summer item.  Would you share that website?

  • Dimity replied 9 years ago

I wasn't sure about them either, so I was glad to be able to try the look at a low cost too. They're great! My husband only ever wears Birks, everyday, so we ended up getting three pairs each and got free air shipping from Germany. As you know, I'm currently footwear challenged so I was so excited to have shoes coming for me! I kept checking the tracking, I was like a kid at Christmas. They arrived within a week and they are even better than I hoped. The leather footbed breathes so it's even more comfortable and there is more support. I ended up getting a red, muted gold and black pair. The red and gold were slightly different looks and are nice. I'm gushing but I haven't been this happy with a pair of shoes since who knows how long. I've got really narrow feet and most sandals are way too wide but I can get these in narrow and adjust the straps. Will shut up now...

Thanks so much!  And gush away!  It's wonderful when you find something that you love and that really works for you.

  • Dimity replied 9 years ago

    Yes! *smiles*
Must say, it's also a bit addictive. Want more shoes.

I love your shorts...I am glad you are having summer now..It reminds me that cold weather is not here to stay...The Birks are fun and functional as well...
    Enjoy your summer at Christmas...

I'm in awe that even in denim cutoffs your fashion aesthetic shines thru. Love the drapey top, and the unexpected wider leg of the shorts!

  • Sheila replied 9 years ago

Looks great ! I wanted to say that I really like your hair in these pictures. It must be starting to behave again !!

  • Karie replied 9 years ago

I think the denim cutoffs look great with the top. Modern and trendy!

  • anne replied 9 years ago

Love the top. And urgently need to find some shorts for hot weather myself!

  • Meredith replied 9 years ago

Wow those must have been some voluminous pants. You really had a vision to turn them into shorts. Looks good!

  • Joy replied 9 years ago

Deborah, thank you for posting this! It's good to remember that summer will come again for us in the North. I'm intrigued by the cutoffs and will be looking for some wide thrifted jeans for a DIY. It looks like something I'd like to experiment with to add a different silhouette for casual hot weather wear. The clamdiggers are getting old in more ways than one :)

Ah shorts!  These are great !  Shorts aside - what about complexgeometries?  I've never heard of them, and now after checking out their website, I want everything!  And they are Canadian!  How did you come across this label?  Then - your hair!  It is looking so great !  And .........Birkenstocks FTW!

Yes, I've had two cups of coffee this morning.

  • Helena replied 9 years ago

Looks great! Still signature Deborah bit with a laid back summery twist!

  • thimblelina replied 9 years ago

Perfect! I need to look for a pair like that...

  • karymk replied 9 years ago

I love you in shorts! Why don't you try and find some in a drapey knit? Love the Birkalikes.  So weird to think you are in the hottest part of your year!

  • Aida replied 9 years ago

Fun shorts! I dig the wider silhouette, looks different in the best possible way. Going to have to keep that hack job in mind for next summer. Gorgeous top, the architectural drape is really lovely. This looks like a great outfit for a hot day! And I must say the dark toes are, of course, perfectly fitting ^^

  • Lyn D. replied 9 years ago

Yes, sometimes only shorts will do during Summer!
I too am on the lookout for the right jean to 'hack' to the length you have here- perfect :)
I agree that your hair is looking lovely!

  • Sharon replied 9 years ago

You need to wear shorts more often, Deborah - you look great in them! This is a fab summer outfit. Casual, but still polished. How did you feel in it?

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

Thank you all very much.  I am almost encouraged to loo for another pair of shorts :) Actually my dream shorts are posted below.  They are Rick Owens, drop crotch, draped shorts and over the summer holidays I am going to have a go at making them :)

Sheila, thanks you, yes my hair is behaving better.  A good trim and colour made the difference.

Lisa, I found complexgeometries through another blog I read.  I have two of their pieces.  This top and a dress which is called the  Square Hood  Tank Dress.  I will pm you later as I have a number of other designers (local to you) that you may be interested in.

Sharon, I actually felt good in this yesterday.  It's all about the top.  I have tried he shorts with other, more conventional tops and I never feel quite right.

  • Suz replied 9 years ago

This is amazing on you! Wow. Love the shorts and especially love the top juxtaposed with them. A fantastic summer look for you!! :)

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

Super cute look. The Birkies make the outfit. Nicely done.

  • Transcona Shannon replied 9 years ago

    Oh yes!

  • Jaime replied 9 years ago

Absolutely no reason you shouldn't wear shorts. Good luck with your sewing project!

  • SarahTheWhite replied 9 years ago

This looks so cool! I agree, the top makes it! I love the fit of of the neck and arms of this top on you. So flattering and yet your signature fluid drape. Love it! And you hair is fabulous!!

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 9 years ago

I really like this look, Deborah. Complexgeometries seems such an apt name for that top--it's so unusual. I love it with the simple boyfriend-style cutoffs. Great proportions. And this is how I like Birkenstocks (or Birkalikes) best--setting off a really stylish outfit.

  • Thistle replied 9 years ago

Fabulous!  Love the way the Birk-a-likes pull in the color from the top. And you rock shorts!

  • soobee replied 9 years ago

Great idea for the shorts - looks chic.  Dang my chubby knees or I would copy this in an instant.  Beautiful top Deborah.
