WIW : A Personal Challenge

Hi Ladies,

I have set myself a personal challenge to actually wear some of my non black ankle boots!!  I have some really nice booties.  Aside from the ones below I also have a blonde toned pull on ankle boot, a blue and white speckled design and a deep red pair (in this WIW).  So far this winter I have been only been reaching for my black ankle boots.  SO... I am challenging myself to wear these other booties to work over the coming weeks.  Each time I have added non black booties to the my wardrobe, the plan has been to wear them with black or with a bit of accent colour, but it's too easy to just go with black:(

So today's effort was with my red ankle boots.  I wasn't overly thrilled with this combo.  I think I over did it with the red top.  I have included my inspiration pic and I think either a black or a white top would have been better and kept it looking sleeker :)

Took pics after work with no daylight so apologies for the quality.  My house lights are all warm toned.

So I liked the idea but I wasn't thrilled with the execution.

xxx Deborah

    Stunning outfit!

    Cute!

Wow.  Love the red accents.  One of my favorite outfits.

Really stunning effect!  I agree, the colorful top may be adding too much extra color.  I think just the scarf and booties would be a good balance, and would look more dramatic.  Or booties and a necklace both in red.  Or even booties and statement earrings in red.  Neat idea for a personal wardrobe challenge!

    Great!
When I wear my wine booties I have 1 other piece in the same colour, like your inspiration pic.
I like your other non-black boots too :)

Thanks for the votes of confidence ladies.  I think this just looked to sloppy to my eye.  I do love the boots so next time I might just try to streamline the rest of the look.  I did think the boots with bare legs (or nude hose) and my black long sleeve cocoon dress might work, with or without the scarf.  I love a challenge.

  • Cococat replied 8 years ago

I really like it Deborah. I wonder how it would go with a black top and just the scarf to bring in the red.

I would love to see them with your cocoon dress.

  • replied 8 years ago

Well, I think it does work well as it is and I think will look great with a black top too. I love your ides to try the boots with the cocoon dress as well.

Your other boots that you're planning to style look great! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Love the red boots as well as other other ones. The laced booties are my favourite.

I think all you need to do is swap the top to white/black and keep the scarf, it's a great look otherwise (for someone who likes to wear color). I would wear the look just as it is!

Not overdone, I like it as it is!!!! Love to see you in (your ways of) using colors, Deb! Very stylish combo, and I love your draping sweaters! Have I missed this one entering your mainly blacks wardrobe?:-)

I LOVE THIS! Not too much to my eye, at all. Maybe you are just not used to the extra color? Really, you look stunning.

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

An excellent challenge, and you look fab. Super Hero Debs is divine.

  • Jaime replied 8 years ago

Looks good to me - looking forward to the speckled pair.

  • jackiec replied 8 years ago

Good for you for setting a challenge! Totally works, you look fab as always!!!

  • cheryle (Dianthus) replied 8 years ago

I think the outfit looks great and very well thought out Deborah.  I had a pair of red Tsubo booties and like you, found them hard to work into outfits.  I finally got them dyed cognac brown thinking I would wear them more - but don't.  *sigh*

Not sure why we have trouble with non-black shoes/booties but I applaud your effort to overcome.  :)

That is a lovely scarf! Honestly I think you are right about the white vs red top but you look fab regardless

  • Karin L H replied 8 years ago

Love those boots! Such a wonderful colour. The whole outfit looks fine to me, but it'd be fun to see a variation that you suggested, for comparison!

  • Aida replied 8 years ago

A great challenge idea for you, Deborah! You do have some really fun non-black booties (I'm particularly fond of the snakeskin-ish pair, yum!). I like the outfit, though yes for you I agree that keeping the scarf and swapping the top to white OR keeping the top and swapping the scarf to white would feel more "you". You could also work this basic outfit concept with those b/w spotty booties. As an aside, that top is gorgeous!

  • Peri replied 8 years ago

Wow oh wow, I love this!! Sloppy, are you kidding me? I'd wear it in a heartbeat. In fact, yeah, it's way too much on you...send me that scarf asap! :)

  • Sveta replied 8 years ago

I actually like it with the red top as well: keeping the things monochrome between the top and the scarf helps to streamline the look. But by all means try with a white or black top next time it would be fab too.
I like your challenge- next let's see the cobalt booties in action! :-)

Black and red are one of my favorite combinations, but it has to be done right or it can look very 80s or worse. You may not be overly thrilled with this combo, but I love it. Very well done. I think you should keep it in your repertoire. I look forward to seeing more combinations with the red booties.

  • Diana replied 8 years ago

I love it! Red shoes are the best! I often actually wear mine (I have several pairs...) with no other red in my outfit. It's a neutral!

  • Runcarla replied 8 years ago

Like as is! Not sloppy at all. Good challenge.

  • Beth Ann replied 8 years ago

Oooh.... I love a good challenge!  I like the movement of the outfit as is, and the exuberance of red always makes me happy.  I could also see, with your success with minimalist and slightly avant garde looks, a look that is all black, except for the booties and one other small piece.  I could see the blue booties with grey, too!

  • replied 8 years ago

I agree that it would be better with a black top, but wow, what a combo of scarf and shoes!

  • Brooklyn replied 8 years ago

It looks good but I think a little less red would be better. The scarf and shoes are so amazing and eye catching that the top kind of competes with them I think. Just plain a black or white top would be worth a try.

  • Echo replied 8 years ago

I really love this outfit. Red seems to be a great accent to drapey black - which always looks great on its own, but the red gives it a whole different feel. I like the booties quite a lot.

  • Joy replied 8 years ago

I like the outfit as is but my thought is that you would like it better without the scarf. I wonder if that is what is making you think it looks messy. The deep red of the top and booties is a beautiful addition.

  • Style Fan replied 8 years ago

I love the outfit.  It did take some time for my eye to adjust to seeing you in something other than black (just kidding :)).  How could you look sloppy?  Your bootie collection is to die for.

  • Eirlys replied 8 years ago

Love the outfit . Agree with Joy: lose the scarf or have another very thin, long one in black with white polka dots, possibly?

Also love your idea of wearing boots in a colour other than black.

  • Rubygirl replied 8 years ago

You nailed the red! Love Love Love

  • Summer replied 8 years ago

I love it as is, Deborah, but you would probably be more comfortable with just the scarf and either a white or black top.
Looking forward to seeing more outfits with coloured booties.

  • dakotacheryl replied 8 years ago

I really like the red top and scarf with the red booties.

The inspiration photo with a cream top and clutch is a totally different look to my eye. Very lovely and would look great with your hair!!
