Where are we at with sneakers?

Hi Fabbers,

Thinking of Spring and seeing white or light coloured sneakers all over social media and now I think I might 'need' a pair.

I wondered what the collective YLF wisdom was on this?

Part of me loves the look of the light sneaker worn with 'everything' from dresses to crop pants, casual looks and dressy look.  The other part of me is not so sure lol.

I could see the silver ones working with quite a few of my Spring/Summer dresses (black / navy / white).  With black ankle pants.

Here are some that I have been checking out on line.

I would love to know what you think?

Thanks for your thoughts:)

xxx Deborah

ps Pics might be small, will see what I can do to correct that.

I have been relying heavily on white sneakers and black avant pinafore dresses and my black wide crop pants so far this summer. A complete La Garconne rip, lol, and not new...but it seems right for the times. I can see the silver for you, because you are grown up and sophisticated (!) :)

I'm completely in LOVE with sneakers and have been wearing them happily all season. I don't think you can go wrong with the silver or even the white ones.

Surprisingly, sneakers seem to go with almost EVERYTHING these days. They can even make a not-so-new outfit look very fresh and current.

I remember being befuddled by them last season when I relied heavily on sandals and watched from the sidelines as woman wore sneakers with dresses. I used to think of sneakers as only 'gear' back then. But now that I'm on board with the trend, pairing almost everything from my wardrobe with sneakers comes naturally to me too.

I've started wearing sneakers to work with dress pants and my moto jacket....so so comfortable.

i hoping this trend sticks around a few more years…..but regardless of the longevity, i'm enjoying it now….love the all whites and the silver…..my personal esthetic doesn't care for the middle 2, but that's my style and i can see those working for you.

I'm loving sneakers as well, and have been favoring this kind of leather sneaker over the retro running shoe I wore earlier in the year.   I struggle with a pure white sneaker, though -- I find the contrast a bit much on my size 11s (large for my height of 5'7").  Part of it is what I'm used to looking at, though.  Silver however works great to my eye, and it is my light sneaker of choice!  Loving these Ecco ones, and was able to pick up the Skechers for only $20 and they have exceeded expectations.

I love sneakers although looking at Pinterest they do seem awfully ubiquitous these days so I wonder how long the trend will last or whether they will now be modern classic iconic items that can be worn regardless of trend.

In any case -- I love them, but I don't wear them much in summer. Why? Too humid in my climate. I tend to wear them a ton between early May and mid-June. From mid-June on it is often sticky and that is when sandals or more open shoes come out. I expect I'll wear them again in the fall.

Sounds crazy, when Maneera can wear hers, but I think the explanation is as follows: she lives in air conditioning and I do not. I do a lot of walking in the heat as well.

In our summers when it's hot and humid (like this one) I can most often be found wearing sandals. On cool summer evenings and during spring or fall, I get a lot of wear out of my sneakers. For spring I prefer white or light gray, and in the fall I wear darker colors like burgundy, navy blue, or dark gray. Regardless of what's in style, I only like athletic type sneakers for exercise, and for daily wear with outfits I prefer a sneaker like Keds.

Of the ones you've shown, I like the solid white and the silver ones best.  I can see you getting a lot of wear from the silver pair, they seem to go nicely with your style.

I recently bought a pair of the Chuck Taylor Converse All Star ll low tops in optic white, and I am loving them! If you haven't heard of these, they are similar to the classic Chuck styling but have a Nike running shoe footed so they are much more supportive. I am wearing them with everything , so I vote yay for summer sneakers!

The all -white sneaker worn with everything is very popular here.  It's a cute look for you but would casualize your outfit.  I think the silver would work well with your style and be a bit more dresser.  I love silver so I'm a bit prejudiced.  So I vote for #4 and then #1.

Well you know what my opinion is - lol.  They are an integral part of my wardrobe, I amassing quite the collection , and find they are a totally modern update to any outfit.  There really isn't anything I have in my closet that I wouldn't also wear a sneaker with.   I think you will find them easy to slide into your wardrobe, and it just may take a bit of getting used to, that's all.  This fall, I'm looking to add in navy suede Pumas (with a dull mustard sole ) and just bought two pair of Converse yesterday too.  I see you don't have any black leather in your pictures.....I find I wear them a lot in Spring and Fall.  White in summer...

I might vote to bump up the bold factor. I've been thinking I need some ultra modern sneakers that are really more of a statement piece. Hope this helps. And it's nice to see you. I've been lurking more recently but not active. Life got in the way. Go Team Black!

I didn't expect to like sneakers with skirts and dresses as much as I do, but they have completely refreshened that aspect of my wardrobe. I'd say you should definitely give them a try. You might be surprised at their versatility.

While I was sitting eating lunch in Seattle yesterday, I only saw one pair of white sneakers. So, as I walked up the hill to Nordstrom to wander the makeup counters, I really started looking at feet passing by. I never saw any other sneakers in any color. Not sure what this means, but I thought its was interesting.

  • replied 7 years ago

Is your spring/summer wardrobe primarily black, white and cobalt blue? I like #1 or #4. I don't like the color of the soles on the other two, but I do think a chunky sole would be worth investigating.

  • Jazzy Dance replied 7 years ago

I've depended on my gray, and my red Converse low-tops for years, but this year I added  a pair of white ones that I will  tuck the laces in and wear as kind of a slip-on. It looks very fresh and stylish to me. Especially with boyfriend jeans, which I'm just trying now.

I have a pair of BELOVED leopard-print velvet pimsolls that don't seem to mesh with the current style, but they're in pristine condition so I'll keep them until they are fab again.

I'm enjoying sneaker too Deb. I think they could fit in pretty well with your style. Of the ones you've shown I like the first and last ones for the colours. I do think you could try a thicker sole too. Could go well with your edgy looks.

  • texstyle replied 7 years ago

I do wear them (simple white most often for me) I think the last pair in silver could go with your style in a nice way. I'd try a few and see how they look in your usual outfits. The comfort factor is great.

  • Sal replied 7 years ago

I purchased a white leather pair from Witchery and have worn them regularly already. Mine have a gold part on the heel. I will get good wear from them til December but not in summer - too hot. I like mine with denim, dresses and athleisure. While I like them a lot I wonder if they are the Birkenstock of the year......

  • Eliza replied 7 years ago

I am hoping that sneakers are here to stay and that designers will continue to put effort into keeping them interesting, supportive and fun. My feet will always need the option, sometimes more than others. Combining comfort and current is winning in my book. Love the minimalist looks in sneakers, sloppy laces aren't my favorite, yet some way to keep them on the foot is imperative. I have a collection of sneakers and wear them often. .

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 7 years ago

I am in the minority, I think, but i am not a fan of mixing sneakers with tailored looks. It's partly because I do a lot of different exercise activities during which I wear sneakers (this is the same reason I'm not big on leggings-as-pants) and I thus like a different look for the rest of the day, and partly because I have big feet.

If you're going to do it, I think that the sneakers have to be immaculately clean and look very much like an intentional juxtaposition with the rest of the look. Otherwise you just look like you're not trying or like a person with perma-foot problems.

  • Lyn D. replied 7 years ago

Well, this is news to me- I will take more notice of footwear trends for S/S now!
I think the laces-less type might be better for making a statement here, rather than looking like they were left on after a workout.

  • Angie replied 7 years ago

I vote silver sneakers for you, Debs.

  • shedev replied 7 years ago

I like the silver ones best.
I'm really not a sneaker person. I searched for nonsneaker sneakers last year.

  • jacquez replied 7 years ago

I used to live in fun sneakers, and then I injured my foot!  Now I need sneaks that either feel fine on their own (usually *not* good-looking) or that will accommodate orthotics. So far I haven't found a fun, modern sneak that fits the bill.

My silver Eccos have been a lifesaver AND they're ventilated! I vote SILVER all the way!

  • Louise replied 7 years ago

I specifically went out on Monday to get some sneakers for casual wear. I picked up some white lace ups from H&M and some pink perforated slip on trainers from Clarks. I wore the white ones yesterday with a flowery cotton dress I wore the night before with heeled sandals for a night out. I usually find it a bit too posh for casual wear but with the sneakers and denim jacket it was perfect. I prefer the look of unbranded sneakers from fashion shops rather than proper sports trainers from sports shops. The ones you've linked to look more as though they are a conscious decision to wear rather than the sports trainers which look a bit 'I got dressed then couldn't find any shoes so threw on my trainers' x
