Marc Jacobs Tote...your thoughts:)

Hi Fabbers,

My sister and I often consult one another before gift buying and she asked if I would like this Marc Jacobs Tote:)

She has seen it in the flesh and thought it looked great. She is a bit of a bag officianado, so I do trust her judgement re quality etc.

I like the tote and I have a soft spot for anything with skulls tho I do tend to be quite discerning about "skull" purchases. The trim looks white but is actually a grey.

What do you think. Do you see this working for me? I see it working predominately for non work days (I only work three days)

Thanks for taking a look:)

xxxDeborah

The bag is lovely. I think this is good for work days also.

It's an edgy little tote for sure! I agree that it's probably more suitable for non-work days and would work well with some of the casual outfit you have posted (black leggings under black skirt springs to mind!).

Fun, edgy and perfect for your style.  How are you with that many skulls?  I only ask, since I love the skull motif, but I have trouble incorporating it into my outfits.  I start over thinking my audience.  I bought a McQ scarf onsale and I love it but I don't wear it as much as I could.  It that's not an issue for you, I think the tote is fab!!

    Thanks ladies!

Gryffin, I think the appeal here is that you do kind of have to look closely to see it is skulls. I have a "knock off" McQ skull scarf that I wear occasionally:). What comes to my mind is more "am I too old to rick skulls" lol

Here's my thoughts on this particular design. I want to preface by saying that I loved some of Alexander McQueen's skull scarves for their design and color, particularly those that were subtle and didn't hit you over the head as being in fact skulls until you really looked.

This MJ bag's pattern design of the stacking of skulls reminds me of actual genocide photos I have seen, and the stacking of skulls in catacombs. The first is horrible and the latter just macabre. It makes me dislike this bag in a way I don't other skull themed fashion that I have seen. So I would pass on this tote.

Deborah - one is NEVER to old to rock skulls!!!

Hmm, I didn't see it in the same way that Claudia did, but now that you've said that I can't un-see it!  My first thought was that it seemed kind of humorous. I was thinking of a pile of sugar skulls, like you'd see at a Mexican day of the dead festival.

I am conflicted about this bag - I keep coming back to post and then backing out. I didn't have the deeply negative associations Claudia did, but the bag did immediately make me think of Munch's Scream, a piece of art that I have conflicted emotions about as well.
Ultimately, I think it's interesting and edgy and has the potential to be somewhat controversial -- which could be a positive or a negative in and of itself. Fashion-wise, I think it would absolutely go with your style.

Claudia, thanks for your comment.  I really appreciate it, as I hadn't viewed the graphic in the same way as you have.  Generally I am attracted to skulls that are 'fun' as opposed to ugly, aggressive, depressive etc.  The sugar skull for example is one I find appealing.

Viva, Munch's Scream is a work that I am very drawn too... haven't really explored why and I did make the association with the bag.

While I don't mind edge, I am not interested in being controversial, so I will definitely consider this further before giving my sister an answer.

Really appreciate everyone's thoughtful considerations x

Does it have a zip top?  Please don't be mad but, I think it reads kind of young teen to me.  I am a skull person boy that sounds bad  but anyway,  I like them and I tend to be very careful with the ones I choose to wear and buy.  Sometimes they can look young or to bad a## I prefer to be somewhere in the middle.  The bag to me does read fun and casual.

I don't dislike the tote Deb but at the same time, I'm not loving it either. I have no issues with skulls in terms of age appropriateness and even think they can be "cool" on us "ladies of a certain age"! I'm just kind of "meh" on it, you know?

  • Angie replied 9 years ago

I like the tote - skulls and all. But if the handles are canvas - I would pass.

  • Janet replied 9 years ago

I kinda like it (and I'm not the biggest skull fan in the world), but I understand what Claudia sees. So I guess I'm on the fence.

I almost bought a bike jersey last week that was black with a huge pink skull on it. So not typical of me! But it was just a wee bit short, and I hate for my cycling jerseys to ride up. So obviously I'm not opposed to skulls as a theme.

I think the handles make it too teenage casual.

Is this one of the Marc Jacobs nylon tote bags?  I can't tell from the picture.  I see these as supplemental bags to carry things in, including purchases.  If you can fold it and carry it within your bag, even better.

I don't really see it as a main purse for you though.

ETA - just read Claudia's comment -- now I can't get past that visual image!

actually the thing that i making me pause on this bag is the shape. i find with totes that are longer than they are wide, everything falls to the bottoms and i can never find what i need.

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

I vote No. I find this bag too ordinary for you, Deborah.

  • LACeleste replied 9 years ago

I don't love it for you Deborah.  IMO not enough elegance to balance out the edge.  You are someone whose style captivates me and this is just an OK bag.
