K/R : New Handbag

Hi Ladies,

Nothing like retail therapy to cheer oneself up... right :)

One of the elements of my wardrobe that I have been slowly addressing over the past 12 months is my handbags:)  I haven't posted much on it, but I have purged and now have a collection of nice quality handbags.  I probably still have more than I really want to have, but I am working on that.

A wardrobe hole I felt I recognised was for a more structured leather bag, primarily for work.  I have been carrying the lovely slouchy black tote my sister gave me for my birthday quite a lot, but I feel taking it to work all the time is going to dull my passion for it.  Also I like a nice structured bag for meetings and when I travel for work, as my outfits tend to be more "suit" based for these occasions. (It's also so much easier to find things in a more structured bag)   Ok, so therein lies my logic for the purchase.:)

Making myself accountable to you, I must disclose that I have a similar bag, but smaller in a patent leather.  It' doesn't get used a lot but I do love it.  It's a little more of a ladies that lunch type bag, if you know what I mean. I use it on occasions where I need to present in a little more of a classic style.

I think this new bag will work with my style, adding structure to the strong unstructured elements of my general style.

So there is my justification!! But what do you think?

#1 - #3   New bag

#4 - #6   New bag with older bag for comparison.

Appreciate your opinions.
xxx Deboah

Love the bag, but it does seem a bit redundant from where I'm sitting. I would worry that you'd get even less use out of the patent, even though you love it. Does the new one come in another color, by chance? I also wear a lot of black/grey and found I preferred a non-black alternative. But if you love it, ignore me and go for it!

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

I hear what you are saying Dashielle.  Good points.  It does need to be a black bag for me though:)

I got quite a similar bag for work and I love, love, love it. It does everything I need.I can fit a file folder in mine, can you?

To me the other bag is extremely different functionally, even though it has a similar silhouette.

I agree with having a work bag. I enjoy my other bags more now that I use them on non-work time.

I'm liking this new bag a lot. And it seems to fit what you describe as a "need" (or a "want" but who's keeping track). I have a hard time finding love purses but I do take the time to do my research. So, in keeping you accountable -- have you done your research to narrow down that indeed this is the purse you "need." And you love. And everything else you've looked at just bores you to tears? I am about to embark on my next bag hunt. This bag has prompted my search.

The patent one is the old bag, correct?

The two are very similar, but I do think the slightly larger size and finish of the leather makes the new one look more professional.

If you LOVE it ignore me :) IMO it looks a little classic for your style, even for work. I love the one in AM's photo.

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

Caro, I would never ignore you :)  I love the bag AM posted but that is too "trendy" for me:)  I guess it's much about our perceptions.  I do agree the bag is very classic.  Hmmmm.... thinking :)

  • Caro in Oz replied 9 years ago

Hmmm indeed - I would have thought AM's one was more modern classic rather than trendy :) :)

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

I think it might be a matter of having seen that style (or at least similar) on A LOT on blogs etc.  To my mind it becomes a trendy item.. does that make sense?

  • Caro in Oz replied 9 years ago

Ah - I get it. I don't read a lot of blogs but yes over-saturation can turn me off some things.

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

Also, Caro, I wonder if I am not in fact a closet classic!!!  I think i find myself drawn to more 'classic' items than 'modern classic'.  But then again, I could the definitions all wrong lol.  Enjoy yoga:)

  • Astrid replied 9 years ago

Is the old bag too small to use comfortably for work? If yes then I can see the need for a bigger one, otherwise I would probably stick to the patent leather bag. Since you mentioned it - the new bag looks more 'ladies who lunch' to me. Nothing wrong with that, but it isn't how I see you.

  • Helenedith replied 9 years ago

Love the bag but noticed that the hardware is gold toned-do you only wear silver? Or is that not an issue for you ?

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

Helenedith normally I am a silver person but I do mix my metals so I am ok with that.  I did consider it tho:)

  • shipskitty replied 9 years ago

I like the bag Deborah, and I can see why you would want a larger one that the one you have, but wonder if you are missing an opportunity to have a structured bag in a slightly different style as well as different capacity. This would give you some flexibility to use it to add another element to your work outfits (and non-work outfits) when capacity is not the key issue.

  • Dimity replied 9 years ago

I love this bag. It's a classic that will always look good. The straps are longer than the patent one so that you can put it over your shoulder rather than holding it on your arm or in your hand, which is very lady-who-lunches. I love the patent one too, but this new one is definitely more of an everyday, take it anywhere bag while the patent is more 'special occasion' to my mind. The new one will dress up your modern outfits nicely but isn't so staid that it will look out of place. I'd keep it, as it's really hard to find nice simple bags. I never object to getting more things in the same style if that style works. No need to have change for change's sake.

  • kkards replied 9 years ago

well, i love the shape of this bag, but the real question is does it work? if you are looking for a bag to take to work, does this bag hold everything you need it to? can you get what you need in and out of it comfortably? are the handles long enough and comfortable enough when you are wearing a winter coat?

  • Elizabeth P replied 9 years ago

Hmmm. I don't know Deborah.  The bag itself is beautiful, and wouldn't be a mistake.  However, I'm not sure it's a 10 for you.  For one, the gold hardware.  For two, it's very similar to the one you have.. sure, it's a differnet vibe, but it's still very similar.  I personally think you should hold out for one that adds a bit more variety to your bag collection, and with silver.

  • replied 9 years ago

I LOVE It.  It seems perfect in every respect.  I especially like a bag specifically for work.

Having just read Elizabeth's comment, I understand her point.  It is worth considering.  I sometimes let my love "of the bag" overshadow sense.  In my case, I would end up with multiple work bags (which I do kinda have ....).

  • lyn67 replied 9 years ago

I would keep it exactly for the gold hardware(In fact I do have a very simillar bag fopr spring). The other one is silver, isn't it? And patent. And smaller. And smaller  handles (doesn't go on shoulder over coats!). Soooo.

A completely other animal. Even if it's still black:-).

Read most of the replies here, but I have to say I completely agree with Caro.  And the bag posted by AM looks a bit like the Givenchy Pandora, no?  That particular bag gets rave reviews for it's functionality and style.  (hint, I'd love one )  I agree that the one you've picked Deb looks a bit staid for your style.....imho.

  • AM replied 9 years ago

I don't know the brand on the bag that I posted. But I sure would love to know. I sympathize if you have seen this bag too often on blogs. That would also turn me off.

  • Helena replied 9 years ago

Deborah, I love it and I think the fact that it is similar to one you already have and love, but perhaps don't use as much because of the dressier effect of the patent, is actually the perfect reason to get it. You've tweaked the one thing that wasn't quite working. Just my thoughts, but I think it's a keeper :)

  • AM replied 9 years ago

Found it - bag is Celine. But again, I really like the bag you've found. I think it is a keeper.

  • catseye replied 9 years ago

Although very similar, I vastly prefer the new one. I think the size and the longer strap did it for me. I don't do well with bags that cannot be put on my shoulders. I think you may use the new one a lot more than your old one.

  • Olivegreen replied 9 years ago

Love the new one. Fits files and computer, looks like. Proportional to your size.
    Maybe sell the old one?

  • Elizabeth P replied 9 years ago

I think Torontogirl is onto something.  I hadn't thought of that.
