Harem Pants Inspiration Thread!

Hi Ladies,

I am starting the Harem Inspiration thread as discussed in an earlier thread.

Please feel free to post your own harem outfits and also any other outfit pictures you come across with women wearing harems that inspire you.

For those interested, mark this thread as a 'favourite' so you can find it easily and we can continue to update it with our harem stylings.

I am excited as this will be a fab resource for styling my harems:)

I attached a stock picture of my current favourite harems, the EF very dropped drop crotch version, but I know some of different versions (not so low a dropped crotch) etc.

I will post my first lot of pics as a commentor.

Have fun and thanks for the inspiration.

xxx Deborah

    #1 - #3 EF Harem Pants

    # 4 Urban Outfitters Drop Crotch Legging styled for office

    #5 - #7

Motto Paris Pant which has a 'conservatively' dropped crotch.

    #8 - #9 Motto Drop Crotch Pant

In my finds the fourth pair of pants are French Connection Harem Pants. Quite tailored, in a sense, for a harem and very work appropriate but I don't seem to have taken photos yet.  I haven't worn them much ... yet.

    Great idea!

I just bought these linene/cotton men's harems from Zara and I can't decide if I should keep them. They don't quite fit my non-male shape. Nonetheless, I love the look, so I'll include it as inspiration.

  • Deborah replied 8 years ago

Thanks Greyscale :)  They are grogeous.  Read a little as a legging.

Brilliant idea, Deborah, and my word, every single one of your own harem
pants outfits has been absolutely gorgeous. A huge inspiration for

ETA, in fact, if you like layers, asymmetrical detailing, drape etc. then there's lots more inspiration to be found in how Sarah Pacini styles her looks. E.g. the below aren't actual harem pants, but I could see the top part of each look (accessories included) work really well with harem pants.

Thanks, Deborah! I will definitely add pics as I experiment. I love seeing your Paris pants again -- they are made for you. And Greyscale, those harem trousers look fab.

  • Ledonna N. replied 8 years ago

I m gonna love this thread great idea. I love my first handmade artist pair. It's challenging finding a pair as a plus size woman with color also. I bout died when I found the artist and they were affordable to me. I love the olive color and will be purchasing more later. I cannot wait to see inspiration, inspired by and unique looks.

  • BlondeAmbition replied 8 years ago

Deborah may I say that you look totally bada$$?  I love your style and I'm dying to get harem pants.  I don't know much about who should and who shouldn't but my body type (hourglass/pear/plus-size) makes it difficult to wear anything but A-line skirts.  I am attracted to the baggy feel and the cool vibe of the harem pants, I just don't know if I can pull it off.  This is the closest I've gotten to wearing anything of the sort.  They aren't even harem pants but do I look like someone who can venture into harem pants?  Feedback is appreciated.

  • approprio replied 8 years ago

I get a lot of inspiration for slouchy trouser stylings from the Japanese blog style-arena. They have a handy keyword search feature (although it can be hard to find in the navigation).

The keyword in this case is sarrouel pants. The full dropped crotch style is more popular among men, but you can still take tips on silhouette and proportion.

    Hopefully this link will work....
    http://www.style-arena.jp/en/t.....sitem=5480

  • approprio replied 8 years ago

And Deborah, you look amazing in your harem pants. Thanks for starting this thread and spreading the love!

  • AviaMariah replied 8 years ago

Confession: I purchased the EF drop crotch harem pants over two years ago and have not worn them once out of the house.  They were a wild card purchase for me but I also found out I was pregnant right after I bought them.  I need to try them on and get some feedback from the forum before I either: relegate them to lounge wear (expensive loungewear) or offer them up for sale here.

ETA: I just found my original K/R thread and I have to ask; why haven't I worn these?  The reason is that I don't think I've seen anyone in my area wear them so I have to steal myself for the diaper comments that I'm bound to get.  But I can handle it.  http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....arem-pants

  • Angie replied 8 years ago

Here you go - although my harems are dressy and woven - and so are my tops:

  • Jane replied 8 years ago

Deb, thank you for starting this thread. I am watching with interest.

Approprio, the Japanese style blog is fascinating. I love the look of the very deep big scarfs.

Inge, I'm going to have a look at the pinterest links.

  • Deborah replied 8 years ago

Inge, I have a Pinterest page of Sarah Pacini harem inspo.

Aliona, yes please post your pics. Your outfits have been so cool.

    Ledonna they are awsome!  Stunning.

Approprio, thanks so much for the link.  The sarrouel pant is something I look at a lot.   Rick Owens does versions of these also:)

Avia Mariah, I will check out your post again.  Maybe this thread will help you get them into rotation outside of the house :)  No one in my town wears this sort of garment either (that I have seen) and my sister commonly refers to them as my diaper pants.. but I know she's just jealous lol.... just check out your old thread.  They are fab on you.  I adore the business look with the jacket.  PLEASE wear them outside of the house, they look fantastic.

Angie, I adore yours.  I have been lusting after a pair of harem shorts since I first saw these :)

    Thanks Jane:)

Blonde Ambition, I think anyone can wear anything.  To my way of thinking it's often about the proportions.  If you love the look why not try it out??  The pants you are wearing look like a slouchy tapered pant.  I like them.  A high low top would work nicely, creating a flattering shape for you.

  • Kari replied 8 years ago

I'm still learning to wear harem pants so I'm all over this thread. So far I've gone almost totally low contrast but would like to play with color and pattern too, like in #3.

  • Deborah replied 8 years ago

Kari these look awesome! I love #3 especially:). Are you enjoying the harems??

  • Kari replied 8 years ago

Deborah, YES. they have invigorated my casual style! I LOVE them. Have dared to wear the all-black version to work, once, too.

  • Firecracker (Sharan) replied 8 years ago

Great thread, Deborah--I will refer to it for new ways to wear my little collection of harem pants. I have three pairs--the two shown here, and a new pair that I will wear when the weather warms a little bit more here.
All photos are my black Eileen Fisher knit harem pants, except for 6 and 7, which are navy cotton harem pants by Desigual.Photo 10 shows the pants pulled up to my knees to look like a bubble skirt.

  • dashielle (Ann) replied 8 years ago

Here are the ways I've found to style the EF harems...am looking for more options though.

  • lasallepal replied 8 years ago

Eileen Fisher Harem pants are a staple in my wardrobe.  They are the easiest piece to wear and pair!  These harem's have traveled the world with me.  I went to order a back-up pair and found that they were discontinued.  Finally, I found a pair at the Nordstrom Rack at a deep discount.  Normally, I would take a size xs, but the smallest size was a S.  I ordered it and it will be my in the wings waiting.  I hand wash them in cold water and let them hang dry.  This has been helpful to keep them in good condition.  I LOVE them...a signature piece.

  • ma replied 8 years ago

Lasallepal- my word, youve got so much style! All of your outfits are beautiful and fun and interesting!

I dont own any harems, but I've enjoyed looking through all the stylings on this thread, so gorgeous!

  • BlondeAmbition replied 8 years ago

I want to join the club! Kari, Firecracker and lasallepal, you guys pull off this look so flawlessly!

Kari, where did you get those pants?  They look like a good starter harem pant and I love the cross design on the front.

  • Deborah replied 8 years ago

Firecracker and Ann... killer inspiration ladies.  Im a little speechless!  So many looks I want to recreate.

lasallepal, fabulous stylings.  You have taken your harems into a more arty styling and it works to well.  Thank you for sharing.

Bumping for Kari... Kari where did you get your pants from??

Anyone else wanting to post their picks, Aliona, Una, Elizabeth???

  • Elizabeth P replied 8 years ago

Coming! I realized my best harem outfits have been when travelling, so haven't got pics. I'll recreate when I have some time.

Laughing at AviaMariah's thread, because in it, Ariadne has just bought hers... And those are the ones I now have... bought them from her a year ago on the style exchange.

And have still not fessed up to the new ones :). Have played a bit, but nothing post worthy. Am now going to use this thread as inspiration.

  • Deborah replied 8 years ago

Yay Elizabeth!  I am not sure but I think Una also has the ones with the shorter drop that you have too.  I find that style can be very work appropriate.  I tend to style my French Connection ones, that are similar, in a more edgy corporate look for work.

I am actually wearing my EF Harems today at work and I have not received any 'weird' looks... yet.  I think my colleagues are used to me now.  I do dress quite differently to the other ladies in my office.  But they are a very kind group of people so maybe they are just not saying anything lol.    So PLEASE wear your new harems.  I have am so sure you will master the styling and feel and look fab.

  • Ledonna N. replied 8 years ago

This thread makes me so happy. I've not been wearing mine that much because I thought they needed structure. I see so many inspiring fits that I would love to recreate. I love fluid drape thank you.

  • lasallepal replied 8 years ago

Deborah, you are right about the "Artinista" styling.  My majored was Art in college.  Although my graduate degree was in Mathematics, now that I am retired I am having fun exploring my arty, creative side.  At 60, I find myself firmly in the "Artinista Tribe".  I found these Raquel Allegra silk pants that are similar to harem pants deeply discounted in a recent Barney's sale last January.  They are silk and I love the feel of them.  They have a shirt sleeve belt/sash detail. I am not a fan of that trend, but I turned the ends of the "sleeves" inside out and rolled them up to form a rose.  It stays it that shape, too!

  • Sally replied 7 years ago

Now I have a pair of harem pants. They were reduced to a quarter of the original price. ..now I hAve to start styling. I think long tops would elongate the look.

  • replied 7 years ago

AviaMariah- if you are interested in selling , I'd be interested in buying .......

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

Sally they look great! Look forward to seeing how you wear them:) vi think there are lots of options ... Enjoy!

Oooh Lisa!!! I do think you would love them! Bi see you styling them with a cool blazer:)

  • AviaMariah replied 7 years ago

lisap - I'm going to do a try-on soon and if I decide to get rid of them you'll be the first to know.  I had to size down to an XS as I usually do in EF so they run big.

  • Jane replied 7 years ago

Disaster!! I went to Eileen Fisher store today and they don't sell them in the store and you can't get the on line!

Then went to Sarah pacini and tried on a couple of pairs of pants with skirts but whilst lovely, I'd set my heart on the EF Harem pants.

I'm wondering if I dare have a go at making some! Will let you know!

  • replied 7 years ago

Well, brace yourselves : I bought my first pair of harems today. Haven't tried them on yet....have to make sure I look as good as I possibly can before facing myself in the mirror with them on. $69 from Bench.

  • replied 7 years ago

And AM - that's the size I wear in EF too. Vanity sizing ftw.

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

    Lisa...cannot wait to see!

Jane, Nordstroms Rack had some EF ones on deep discount online earlier in the week, did you check there?

  • replied 7 years ago

I fear EF *might* have discontinued this particular style of harem. Hopefully they're just on manufacturing backlog as I feel theat fashion has finally caught up to their look!

Deborah, I was going to post my pics but notice the thread is part of your blog. Does that mean all photos are accessible even to people who aren't logged in as YLF members?

  • El Cee replied 7 years ago

You ladies have inspired me. Just bought the EF harems on super sale at Nordstrom Rack. Still a few left in various sizes for those looking.

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 7 years ago

I love the very dropped EF style.

I have semi dropped from YogaSmoga.<http://yogasmoga.com/women/bot.....?color=261>

All of them remind me of a very bright pink Esprit pair I bought in a back alley in Kowloon in the 80s, and wore with a matching orange, pink and purple vest top. Did not fit in super well at prep school.

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 7 years ago

also I forgot but I collected these awhile ago and I think someone other than me needs to purchase and model them.

  • Jane replied 7 years ago

Hi Deborah, good tip and I have thought about it. Thank you!

It just feels a it of a Big Thing to me to actually import EF pants as I'm based in the uk! I'm not sure I'm quite brave enough!

  • ma replied 7 years ago

Wow! El Cee that IS a super sale!! I am tempted.  I'm usually a 6 or 8 in most brands, and I've never tried EF at all, do you ladies think a small would fit?

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

Marble I am a US 6 - 8 and I got small in regular. They are perfect, and the length is what I wanted too xx

  • ma replied 7 years ago

    Thank you, Deborah!

  • lasallepal replied 7 years ago

I purchased a back up pair of E.F. harem pants (low drop as pictured on this site) at Nordstrom Rack.  They do not have XS in the regular size, but seem to have a variety of sizes to choose from in the petites.  They are also available on ebay.  However, the Nordstrom Rack site is cheaper.  Check that out first, before going on ebay.

  • Mamavalveeta03 replied 7 years ago

Talk about an inspiring post! I'm getting the itch for harem pants, but I'm on the higher end of the size range, and not sure they're really me....even tho I have my avant-garde moments! Wonderful job with styling, ladies!

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

Just found a pic wearing my French Connection harem pants so adding to the thread. These are a more office appropriate pair if you work in amore corporate environment.

  • Greyscale replied 7 years ago

I just came across these harem jeans on a resale site. I'm tempted, but I worry they wouldn't work with my short legs and now-curvy hips. But I do always turn to jeans ahead of softer pants... so maybe this is how to break into the harem world. What do you all think of harem jeans?

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

Greyscale I love them!! I'm on the lookout for a pair. I can see these being perfect for your style:)

  • Sally replied 7 years ago

Wore mine out for the first time to a potluck dinner. Someone said "like your pants " they are so confortable.. wish I'd jumped on to this trend earlier.

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

Dally they look wonderful. Beautiful styling!! Thanks for adding to the thread xx

  • replied 7 years ago

Sally, that's a fab styling of your harem pants. YLF.

  • Sally replied 7 years ago

Thanks Deborah and Aliona. I've always wanted to wear pants like this but didn't think they'd suit. I'm really enjoying this relaxed look and will wear it more.

  • Sally replied 7 years ago

Then wore them the next day to the salon with sneakers and a more casual shirt.

  • El Cee replied 7 years ago

Wow Sally! Those harem pants look amazing on you. You ladies are all so inspirational. I am so enjoying this thread and all the fabulous outfits.  (I look forward to styling mine when they arrive next week.)

  • DonnaF replied 7 years ago

EF harems worn to parents' brunch before tomorrow's graduation. It was too hot to wear jacket and on way back I removed knee highs.

  • El Cee replied 7 years ago

DonnaF -- OMG, your outfit is awesome. The jacket is killer gorgeous.

  • Sally replied 7 years ago

Donna that is fab. It's great how we all get a pair of harem pants and we all style them differently. I love it!

  • DonnaF replied 7 years ago

Three more pics taken in our tiny hostel room. Sparkly sweater is a bit too long for a semi tuck in middle but I think side is ok. Black booties probably would be better but I didn't pack them. Pockets are great for room card.

  • Cindy replied 7 years ago

Ok I have to admit it...when I read the title I thought of I Dream of Jeannie. There are some interesting looking pants on here... some good and some well interesting.  :-)

  • Ledonna N. replied 7 years ago

I just wore a pair of denim harem pants I love them they are so versatile.the pictures don't do them justice. I went dancing later on that night and they moved effortlessly.

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

The inspiration in this thread is killing me! Sally, great outfits. DonnaF wow, I am going to wear my snow leopard boots with mine!! Ledonna you own the look x

  • UmmLila (Lisa) replied 7 years ago

Playing with the EF Harem pants from the Rack. (Every time I say harem pants, I feel like Edward Said, the late author of Orientalism, is going to roll over in his grave. Sirwal is probably a better word.)

The first is with a white faux leather-front Bailey 44 tee, and the Cayanne booties.

Second is a blush splatter print silk/knit comb from Glam LA, and Naya booties from last year. I think they are too heavy, now that I see the photos, and would swap out for black gladiators or sandals. I like the blush top better and that's what I'm wearing today.

I tried a few choices for top and I like them best with a shorter top that is sleeveless.

These pants are definitely not my typical look, but I've never been wedded to cultivating a particular style persona, so I'm enjoying them.

  • Kari replied 7 years ago

This is long overdue (I missed the calm out on the thread earlier) but I'm finally posting my harem pants find.

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

UmmLila, you look great and I really like your styling of the harems:)

Aliona, thank you! I'm still in awe of your great styling xx

    Kari, thanks :)

  • BlondeAmbition replied 7 years ago

DonnaF that jacket is wicked. Ladonna that's head to toe fierce!

    Thanks Kari!

  • Pingvin replied 7 years ago

UmmLila I love it the best with the gladiator sandals - looks awesome!

  • BlondeAmbition replied 7 years ago

I found a pair of harem pants in my closet (who knew?) that I got as a gift a while back and thought "nah I can never wear these."  They are a jersey fabric very light and suitable for summer so I tested this outfit.  It was a bit chilly so I threw on a jean jacket, not pictured here.  Also, I'm testing out my first oversized topknot.  What do you think!?

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

Very cool Blonde Ambition. What a nice surprise in your closet lol.

  • Ledonna N. replied 7 years ago

Hello YLF Fam, these are my new to me Overall denim drop crotch harem jeans.

Custom upcycled I just received them last night . I thrifted them in the message section of the op shop. I would love suggestions of how to wear them this summer. I plan on wearing them this weekend and many to come.

  • BlondeAmbition replied 7 years ago

I recently bought another pair of harem pants and will link a picture soon.

In the meantime, if any plus sized ladies are looking for harem pants take a look at JIBRI http://www.jibrionline.com/pants/  Very cool stuff but a bit pricey.

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

Angela sorry I missed your post. Thanks for linking. What a fabulous outfit. You carry off the harems beautifully.

Blonde Ambition...what an amazing range. Cannot wait to see yours x

  • BlondeAmbition replied 7 years ago

Am I the only still into this fashion look?  I finally got a chance to wear my new harem pants this weekend to an event at an art gallery.  I got many compliments on the look.  Sorry I forgot to wear my shoes in the pic.  My clutch has little studs in the shape of skulls lol.

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

BlondeAmbition I think plenty of us are still very into this trend:). I'm unable to wear mine much at the moment as well need slightly warmer weather to really enjoy them. Love this combo... Beautiful drape and flow! Looking fabulous xx

  • dashielle (Ann) replied 7 years ago

I've been wearing mine once a week or so this Summer. Just yesterday, in fact.

  • replied 7 years ago

Ann, that outfit is fabulous! You are reinspiring me to pull mine out of the donation cupboard! My style has shifted to more fitted and tailored, but I'm still loving the harems on everyone here.

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

Oooh Ann cannot wait to get mine out for Spring! So glad you posted this :). I have just acquired some silver sandals similar to yours (yours are way cooler ) and was worried I might have lost it...you know ... Do I need a space helmet to go with these??? But you are rocking the silver footwear so I reckon I can too xxx

  • dashielle (Ann) replied 7 years ago

Ha ha Deborah, only if your space helmet sparks joy! Those are fab enough to eat. Good thing I have the silver, holographic, platform tennis sandals of joy, or I'd be all over those!

  • Bonnie replied 7 years ago

My Personal Challenge this week was to finally style the harem pants I bought on sale last August. My goal was to add outfits to my hot autumn capsule. Comments and suggestions welcome.

  • K2 replied 7 years ago

Wow, Bonnie, those outfits are great - your boots <drool>. They just make the look! Inspiration for sure!

  • Bonnie replied 7 years ago

Thank you K2. I tried all of my shoes and liked the Docs best.

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

Bonnie, thanks so much for posting.  This thread is a hive of inspiration.  Those boots look amazing with the harems (now I have to try this) and your layering is fab.  Thank you xxx

  • K2 replied 7 years ago

So glad you started this thread Deborah -such great ideas here for all seasons. Thanks.

  • Sally replied 7 years ago

Oh I love those looks with the harem pants Bonnie. You're very funky! Are they Dr Martens? I used to have a pair...if I only buy 1 shoe next year, it will be a pair like those.

  • El Cee replied 7 years ago

Wow, Bonnie! Love your outfits. I like seeing ways to style the harems for the cooler weather. And Deborah -- thanks for starting this thread. It is awesome!

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

Spring is the perfect season for my harems so here's two recent stylings :) xxx

    Keep the inspo coming xxx

  • Elizabeth P replied 7 years ago

I don't think I ever got around to posting in this thread... I was waiting until I'd worn mine a few times, and that took a while :)

The first of these are my initial stylings, then some wears.  You'll notice the change in length in photo #6.  Pretty sure this was after their first wash :(

Did anyone else have theirs shrink?  Were you able to stretch them out in subsequent washings (ie when wet)?  I'm disappointed with this... I much preferred the longer length.

  • Elizabeth P replied 7 years ago

Deborah, you look amazing, as usual!
(and noticing the lovely length on yours.... :( )

  • Bonnie replied 7 years ago

Deborah and Elizabeth P: Thanks for posting and I love all of your looks. The shoes are fantastic and will help me shop for S/S next year.

  • El Cee replied 7 years ago

Deborah and Elizabeth -- OMG! You both look so chic and gorgeous. Thanks for the inspiration.

  • judy replied 7 years ago

What a great idea to start this thread, Deb.  Everyone looks so fab in their harem pants!

I love them...though the EF ones weren't for me, I found a less extreme linen cotton version from Hope that I've worn happily for a year or so.  At first it felt strange, but gee, comfortable.  Then I never looked back.

I'd love to find some denim equivalent for colder weather.  Hope you bought those R13's Greyscale, they are so good!

  • Echo replied 7 years ago

I do not own any harem pants. The only pair I've ever been tempted to get are these, but DH thinks they look like "Hammer pants", so I have not yet ordered them.

  • Deborah replied 7 years ago

Elizabeth the only thing I would recommend is rewash and hang them to dry. Gently stretch the legs out and see how the dry. You could also press them (inside out) and gently stretch as you press. The stretching while wet works well on ponte fabric so could be worth a try xx

Love your outfits! Inspired by your styling x

Deborah good to see you post.  My favourite is #7.  I love all the angles and the burst of colour from your necklace.  The look is so edgy and avant guarde.  Love.

Wow, these are all fabulous, Deborah. I especially like 10. Very different, and so cool looking. I like the sneakers with it, giving the whole outfit such a carefree chic look. (Like: "I'm just kickin' around in these awesome clothes.")

Thanks Style Fan, I'm trying to carve out a bit more time to get back to YLF I miss you all x

Firecracker, thank you. I have taken a string ethical stance in my purchasing the outfit in 10 is locally made. Top is by new label Mimi The Label designed and made in my adopted home town and the pants by Cavaletti Gallery in a town an hour away and fast becoming my go to for new items. Japanese inspired, amazing fabrics and all made in the small studio where the shop operates from as well.
