Can you help me choose?

Hi Ladies,

I have been asked to assist in the promotion of a local fashion label's winter jacket/coat range for 2015.  Initially I need to choose two items from their catalogue.  The quality is very nice and their designs are generally more classic than I normally wear, however I have identified some items that I think might work for me.

I know it's difficult not seeing things on, but in the first instance I need to make my selection from the catalogue.  I am hoping you might have some input based on knowing my wardrobe and body a little.

Here are the contenders.

#1 Wool blend wrap coat - could be worn open, no belt, or belt tied to back to
slim down the volume at the front.

#2 Leather blazer - available in black

#3 Grey Zip coat - also available in black (the red looks too orange for me)

I won't tell you which I am favouring but you can probably guess.

Thanks for taking a look and sharing your thoughts.

xxx Deborah

Oh, that sounds like fun! Will you be both modelling and helping to organise, I wonder. Anyway, #1 seems the obvious choice from what I've seen of your style, since it has a drapey collar. Also, I like that you could wear it several different ways. However, I could see you in #2 as well (maybe in the black lol!)

So exciting, and looking forward to hearing about your final choice and the event itself.

What a fun opportunity for you. They do look a nice quality Deborah which is a bonus if you are putting your name in to the promotion. My feeling is #1 is the one that you have chosen. The colour, drape and slight asymmetry seem most like your style.

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

    Thanks Ruth.  Will report back:)

DEB, are either of the other two (#2 & #3) contenders in your opinion?

  • Lucy replied 9 years ago

What a fab opportunity! I think #1 in terms of both colour and drapey style? But I wonder if the grey would also look gorgeous against your black? I think you would rock either :)

  • Deb replied 9 years ago

Deborah....I think #3 could be a contender for you but it may be too predictable. I have to be honest and say when I have seen you in colour lately, I have really liked it on you. Your complexion seems different with colour, so maybe the red leather could work too. Since you are asking me to choose..... Let's move you out of your comfort zone and go #2 worn undone.

  • anne replied 9 years ago

I like 3. I really like 2 but perhaps more for me than you!

  • crutcher replied 9 years ago

Ok...you are getting my initial reaction..no thinking..just reacting...Number 1 is the choice I can see you in...2 is just not you and 3 is too much...Interesting to see how close I am...Glad you are having this opportunity to be noticed for your excellent style...

  • rachylou replied 9 years ago

No no, not 3. Not even in black. Hehe. I say 1 or 2, but I think 2 is more interesting.

  • Summer replied 9 years ago

What a wonderful challenge for you, Deborah.
I'm finding it difficult to second-guess your preferred option.  I know you like drape, but I don't recall seeing you in a belted style before; at least, I don't picture you in that style.  So I'm going with the outsider:  the leather jacket, in black, of course.

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

Thanks so much ladies. My preference at this stage is #1 and #2 (in black of course).

I think #1 would work, it is a style that is 'typical' for me:)  Summer I don't generally belt but if there is not too much fabric and it's nice and smooth, it could work, but I would anticipate wearing it open mostly.

#2 is a little out of my comfort zone BUT I love a blazer and for some time I have wanted to try a leather blazer.  I was imagining that it could be a cool option for work when I need a blazer and could possibly edge up a more classic work outfit.

I have added some pics of leather blazer outfits but I realise this one might just be too classic a cut to work?

    #3 could be a good casual option for weekends and grey would be a nice change;

    Hmmm

  • Deb replied 9 years ago

Wow the jacket looks great in black per the second photo Deborah. I must admit it is more you than the red and I imagine it would really suit you. Not to say the red wouldn't look good too, but the black would be way more versatile. I'd be curious to have a look at their website if you are happy to share Deborah.

  • Sharon replied 9 years ago

That's very exciting, Deborah. I think #1 is the obvious choice, of course. But I really like the idea of #2 in black. The colour will allow it to slot in to your wardrobe, and the more classic style will serve as an interesting juxtaposition to your softer, drapey clothes. The red is very dramatic, but I worry that having a strong colour will make the classic style more evident, and boss your other clothes around.

  • carter replied 9 years ago

#1 and #3 would be great additions and a nice fit with your wardrobe. I just can't wrap my head around #2 for you.

  • lyn67 replied 9 years ago

Nr 1. Then 3. Both in black for you? But I love nr 3 in dove:-).

  • Elizabeth P replied 9 years ago

I'm kind of with Carter on this one.  When I looked at them I thought #1 for sure (but is it different enough from other things you have?  it's so your style, it may end up being not unique enough, or already present in your wardrobe in some similar form to be worn much).  #3 was my second choice (not sure about the grey though, perhaps in black?  But then have the same possible questions as I have for #1).  #2 is beautiful, just seems more tailored and classic than I'd expect on you.

  • carolbee replied 9 years ago

I haven't read any other replies. My favourites are 1 & 3, I love wrap styles. Having said that they are very similar, so perhaps pick your favourite out of those two plus #2. How is this going to work, are you going to be photograhed out and about wearing them? Will we be able to say we knew Deborah back when she was a mere mortal!

  • Meredith replied 9 years ago

How fun! I like 1. Although I like the idea of a leather blazer, there's something about the stance of the red jacket that seems not as current. I feel like if you're going to wear such a classic piece it needs to be a very modern version to work with the other things you own. But I don't wear many blazers. Anyone else have reservations about the stance?

  • Lisa replied 9 years ago

I vote 1 and 2, both have structural elements that I associate with your style.  #3 looks a little softer versus the other 2 pieces.

  • Thistle replied 9 years ago

Not reading anyone else's comments, here we go:
    #1
    #3
    #2

I would put three first IF it were black.

  • amiable replied 9 years ago

I think #3 in black too, but really like all three of them :)

  • replied 9 years ago

I agree with Meredith above -- the first thing I noticed about #2 was that it looked a little stodgy (except for the color) and didn't seem to suit your style at all. I'd be curious to see how you could make it work though.

  • Marilyn replied 9 years ago

#1 is my favourite.  I love the shape and the drape.
I also like the thought of a black leather blazer although it's pretty classic looking.  I think it might be a nice contrast with some of your drapey pieces.

  • Joy replied 9 years ago

I was going to suggest 1 and 3 as looking most like your draped style, but 2 in black would be lots of fun to try. I have a ( thrifted) black leather Gap blazer and it is quite versatile. It also adds a texture to an all black outfit.

  • CocoLion replied 9 years ago

First choice #1.  #3 Second choice.  #2 comes third.

ETA -- the belted jacket is the most trending silhouette IMO -- which weighs in my opinion.

  • Inge replied 9 years ago

    I second Denise:-)
I too really like the idea of a leather blazer for you, Deborah, but would prefer a more modern one.

Let us know what you decide?

  • replied 9 years ago

1 and 3. I like 2, but I think you might feel constrained by the cut and it doesn't have much "edge". If you could only choose one, I think 3 would be my choice.

    That's exciting!

  • Zibbets replied 9 years ago

What a fun opportunity for you!

I like #1 and #3. One is perfect. It will be fab with jeans, trousers, pencil skirt, midi skirt, full skirt or skirted leggings.

I'm not sure about the zip or the ribbed inside of the collar in #3.

The black leather blazer could be great, but it strikes me as possibly dated and potentially difficult to style.

  • Day Vies replied 9 years ago

1&3 are definitely you. Although I think #1 is most you, I think 3 would be fun for you to work with given the minimal patterns you wear and your emphasis on cut, texture and or drape.

  • Mellllls replied 9 years ago

    i vote 3

  • Greyscale replied 9 years ago

#1 obviously, and I guess #3 in black.

I think you should get a black leather blazer, for sure, but not that one. Yours should be more like Emmanuel Alt's in the photo you posted: straight cut, thin lapels.

  • Lyn D. replied 9 years ago

1 and 3- I can't see you in a classic leather blazer like the one here.

  • replied 9 years ago

I vote 1 and 3. Something about the cut of the lapel doesn't gel with me so much in 2, though I would need to see it in black really to make a final decision.

  • Caro in Oz replied 9 years ago

Agreeing with Greyscale - a less classic blazer would be really fab.

  • AM replied 9 years ago

Didn't read everyone's comments but #1 would be a definite. And for my second choice -- I'd lean toward #3 -- but if you want to explore a new area, then I'd choose #2 in black.

  • Gigi replied 9 years ago

Haven't read the other comments thoroughly, but my first impression was #3 in black, then #1. However, the zipper on #3 may be too hard edge for you; although you wear lots of edgy things like asymmetric cuts and the like, they're generally not "hard" like the exposed zipper is, if that makes any sense. So I guess I am on the fence between 1 and 3.

I don't like #2 for you because it seems way too classic and symmetrical, and there isn't much drape. I associate your style with asymmetry and drapey fabrics.

Congratulations on being asked to do this! :)

  • Beth Ann replied 9 years ago

I vote #1 and #2!  I see this was your order of preference, too.  Let us know how they work out!

  • Echo replied 9 years ago

Yes, the first one would be the obvious choice, but I am not sure that duplicating the same look you favour in clothing in outerwear is the best approach. So I am going to go outside the box here and say that I prefer #3 because it provides just enough drape to mirror your style, but still has enough structure to counter that (which is more important in outerwear, IMO, because it can tend to look heavy anyway), and a lighter colour. And then I would go with #2 because I can really see the red structured jacket popping against a drapey, black wardrobe.

  • Jaime replied 9 years ago

Well #1 seems like a no-brainer! Tell us more!

  • Dee replied 9 years ago

Another vote for #1 as the obvious choice. Then #3, which I think could work welll with your wardrobe but would be more outside your norm. I don't see #2 as your usual style but I would be interested to see how you styled it!

  • dashielle (Ann) replied 9 years ago

I'm late to the party (as usual) but since we have very similar tastes, I'm going with #1 and #3 in black. The leather blazer needs some flair to kick it into modern territory, to my eye. I'm not sure about the ties though...to me, they are a tricky proposition and need to be soft/narrow enough to not add bulk, otherwise I've been known to pin or clip to get the shape (in a pinch). I'm psyched for your endeavour too!

  • Deborah replied 9 years ago

Just want to say thank you so much for your input. I have made my decision. Clearly #1 was a no brainer so that is my first choice. I'm going to keep my second choice to myself for now - as a variety of views were expressed re #2 and #3;). What I will say is that both items will be in black. Can't wait to show you and thanks so much for the encouragement.
